The melody of space

   Lithographic Space

Looking at our city from a distance, the straight lines and square boxes of modernist buildings appear stiff and pale. Ran Koolhaas, who is keen on artistic architecture, once said bravely: Architecture should express new freedom. This freedom is the need to get rid of the constraints of modernism on architecture. Shall we have a deep reflection on modernism, what has it brought to the city, the urban forest constructed of concrete, abandoned culture and tradition outside the cold square box, what will it bring to future generations, perhaps only sunshine, but no fresh Air.

In terms of culture, buildings should always be done with charm. This is a tradition in the architectural world, and it is also the grass that architects love. They can show their artistic talents to their heart's content and dress up their beloved buildings more beautifully and fancyly. , and the client is also willing to pay the construction fee, and the citizens are also willing to come to this piece of grass to enjoy the shock brought by the art architecture.

Behind the brilliant architects Koolhaas, Isozaki and Gehry, there are many outstanding architects that we don't know, such as Steven Holl.

The Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art designed by Holl is quiet and simple, echoing the distant Tiro Bay and setting off each other. Its northern end resembles a douban that grows out of blue sand and gravel. Several pieces of glass reflecting the blue sky are mottled and dazzling, and the curved shell adds softness to the building. Extending south along this curve, it bends into a shallow crescent space, and at the southern end, it bends into a combination of blocks, rough and powerful. The space in the museum is thick and full of spirituality. The beautiful curved walls and the penetration of light seem to enter the cave of time, mysterious and quiet.

Hall is very good at using light wells to make light interspersed in sprawling buildings, dividing spaces, such as the Bellevue Art Museum. This museum in Washington, USA, is a bit abstract and dazzling with the post-modern approach to the front. From the side, the block surface is very strong, solemn and powerful, but when you walk in, you don't feel dull. The light from the surrounding or the top can easily penetrate, which is very interesting.

Nowadays, many buildings do not pay attention to natural light, and most of them use artificial light. Hall uses natural light to sculpt space, and the space he creates contains human nature and is full of vigor. And when we appreciate it, there is a feeling of deja vu and kindness. It is we who have abandoned previous traditions and followed the trend of assimilation.

  The melody of space

Through the night, you can see the intercity in the distance. Many skyscrapers are soaring into the sky, and the buildings with different heights are nestled against each other. Under the colorful neon lights, such a beautiful city outline is outlined. Of course, living and working in a skyscraper, watching the birds dance, listening to the white clouds babbling, and chasing the breeze, is indeed very pleasant. Cities are often heard competing for high-rise buildings.

Tall skyscrapers can never escape the gravity of the earth, and have to maintain a single shape, only slender, but not charming enough. However, low-rise buildings can be used to their full potential. As long as they want, they can almost do it. Therefore, low-rise buildings have always been cherished by masters. Therefore, the handed down buildings are mainly low-rise buildings, such as the Sydney Opera House, Falling Water Villa, Ronchamp Church and so on.

Some architects like to design skyscrapers, while others have a strong affection for low-rise buildings, and Peter Eisenman is undoubtedly the latter. He is not at all sensitive to the height of the building, the height has more symbolic meaning

than practical value, and also hinders the communication between people. His style tends to be conservative, but there is no lack of avant-garde. Many of his works are irregularly fused together by stepped blocks. The appearance is plain and has a faint rhythmic beauty, while the interior is deep and deep, intersecting with each other, and the light is flying. Dance, very personal.

The third generation of modern master architects is restless, and Eisenman is no exception. Compared with Rem Koolhaas's hard-edgedness, Eisenman is much more low-key. He spends more time exploring the multi-dimensionality of space, designing a series of "cardboard houses", many cultural facilities, such as Egypt Emory Center for the Arts, Columbus Convention Center, Aronoff Center for Design and Art, Wexner Center for the Arts, etc. work.

Among them, the Columbus Convention Center can be regarded as Eisenman's representative work. From a bird's eye view, it looks like a piano keyboard, but also like a huge abstract sculpture. The orange, khaki and light gray concrete blocks echo each other and stand out from the surrounding environment. Its street-facing facades are eclectic, some are transparent, some are solid, with very obvious post-modern traces. Entering the interior is like entering a fantasy realm. The blue light is projected through the skylight, and the bottom column supports the thick wall, which is full of modern and hidden atmosphere. There are many frame columns inside, the upper and lower floors are connected, and the space can flow from all directions. Walking on the lattice floor does not feel oppressive, but adds a lot of interest, as if you can hear the melody of the building.

The Emer Art Center, on the other hand, is more mature, and the colors are more harmonious. On the whole, it is like the rock formations in nature, layer upon layer, although a little messy, but still orderly. The interior treatment is more atmospheric. There are several pillars supported by the huge concrete plain surface, and people sit under it, feeling the spirit of heaven and earth, and also open-minded and joyful.

  The splendor of the city

Passing across the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, stopping on the banks of the Rhine, crossing the Strait of Malacca, overlooking the Victoria Harbour, and traversing the world, challenging the world's tallest building has always been the elegance of city decision makers. From the Empire State Building to the World Trade Center Building, and then from the Sears Tower to the Petronas Towers, the height of the building has been refreshed many times, as if the height can overwhelm everything, indicating the splendor of the city where the building is located, a symbol of national strength. strong. There is not only a high level of competition, but also a competition for the style of the building. It is a game of luxury, and the initiative is in the hands of the architect. Cesar Pelli is such a person.

Some people abroad believe that Perry belongs to the representative of the new technology school, and the buildings he designed are exceptionally beautiful. He often uses this expression method. Thin lines are drawn between the blue glass curtain wall and the aluminum plate, which contains modern charm and exquisite materials. His gentle expressionism is deeply loved by urban decision makers. In Kuala Lumpur, the Peri-designed Pejonas Tower stands tall in the night, the lights are reflected, the jewels are dazzling, and she looks so dignified and so beautiful.

When I saw the Pejonas Building, I couldn't help but think of Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sagrada Familia designed by Gaudí. The towering spires are full of mystery and symbolize majesty. Although some details are combined with the characteristics of Islamic architecture, there are also cascading towers in the Eastern style. Bridges are used to connect the sister towers, so that the relatively independent towers are connected together to form a huge door, and the spaces penetrate each other, adding to the overall more humanized. Perry inherited Yamasachi's sister tower form in the design of the World Trade Center building, but he surpassed Yamasachi in terms of meaning and appearance.

Let's go back to New York and enjoy the beautiful Manhattan skyline, the World Financial Center and Winter Garden are also by Perry. Originally, the World Financial Center and the World Trade Center Building have formed a good tacit understanding, relying on each other and feeling better than old friends. But the World Trade Center building has been destroyed, and the golden curtain wall of the World Financial Center looks a little lonely. The World Financial Center was once praised by colleagues in the construction industry, and felt that it played a supporting role well, but now it has become the protagonist, which is a bit overshadowed.

Returning to the charming Oriental Pearl Hong Kong, the Cheung Kong Center is undoubtedly the pride of Hong Kong people, which is also one of Perry's masterpieces. The tall and transparent building rushes into the sky, and the lights are mottled at night, showing the charm of blue. The building is a slender cuboid as a whole, with a blue glass curtain wall hanging on the surface. Unusually, Perry uses a pure modernist approach, and he seems to have a knack for a variety of styles. Perry's architectural works are spread all over the world, and his handling of skyscrapers has been imitated by young architects, which has established the status of Neotech in the architectural world.

  Sleek architectural treasure

. Perhaps, architects will regard works as their own children. After all, every work is permeated by the architect's hard work, and she is full of affection for her. I hope she will be praised by the world, even if it is a trivial attention. The architect will also have a big smile on his face. Some architects have only a handful of works in their lifetime, and even fewer works that can last forever.

Norman Foster was born in the country of wealthy gentlemen. His works are not only subtle, but also very connotative, and there are few traces of hard-edged avant-garde. He also loves his architectural treasures very much, and specially made many gorgeous coats for them, one of which is high-tech neon clothes and the other is an eco-friendly coat. Although these coats are generally expensive, Foster never worries, because The construction party voluntarily paid for it and let him spend it at will. Most architects will use the most advanced construction technology, but they are not necessarily better than Foster, and the environmental protection coat can be described as originality and some embellishments. While people admire his beautiful architectural treasures, they will not I thought he was as rigid as a gentleman.

I first knew Foster from the HSBC Bank Building in Hong Kong. Mr. Pei designed the Bank of China Building in Hong Kong, so he designed this building for HSBC Bank. Like many people, I could not accept the emptiness there. Like a factory, the building stands in the middle of modernist square box buildings, and the facade adopts postmodernist machine symbols, showing a cold feeling. There is a huge atrium inside the building, which is very empty. I think it is not easy for white-collar workers to work or live in it, and it is not easy to flirt with colleagues. However, it is interesting that Foster has a vent at the top, which can send uncontaminated fresh air in mid-air to the bottom.

Foster wanted to escape the shadow of modernism from the heart, and he did not want his architectural treasures to live under straight lines, so he consciously explored the curvaceous beauty of architectural appearance. He designed a city hall in London with a side like a green mango slanting into the ground, with Tower Bridge not far away. Her body is round, crystal clear, like a lady lying by the Thames, beautiful and charming. And his other work, the London headquarters building of the Swiss insurance company, is more feminine, like a bud in bloom, making the ancient city of London more charming. Her outer twill lines circle upward, like a slim fairy, her clothes fluttering, and the transparent glass curtain wall reflects the light of the sun, which is particularly dazzling in the gray city.

This British gentleman architect has designed many works all over the world, including Beijing and Hong Kong. He uses high-tech means to improve ventilation and lighting, which is indeed worth learning from. It's not very suitable for us, and his kung fu tricks are only "flower fists and embroidered legs".
