Why do people scream when they're scared

People's first reaction when they are frightened is often to scream. When people feel fear, they will accelerate the secretion of adrenaline, so there is a rapid heart rate, breathing difficulties and other conditions. Screaming relieves stress caused by excess adrenaline. This is an instinctive behavior. Its role is to increase stress, can quickly maintain the stability of the internal environment in emergency situations.

Screaming is a behavior that dates back to when our ancestors coexisted with the ancestors of other primates. For them, screaming is a key social survival skill. Screaming plays an especially important role in monkey populations. Experts say monkeys' squeaks can convey a variety of messages, with different pitches and volumes representing different levels of urgency. African vervet monkeys, for example, have evolved a unique set of squeaks that not only warn each other but also indicate what kind of predator is nearby.

From an evolutionary perspective, it's not hard to see why screams of fear are the easiest to attract attention, since they clearly signal imminent danger. So our ancestors may have been very good at squeaking and distinguishing other people's squeaks.

Scientists believe humans scream because squealing in terror is a positive evolutionary behavior that warns of impending danger. Over a long period of evolution, people who could not easily distinguish between different types of screams might not be able to respond appropriately in life-and-death situations, and over time they disappeared from the human population. Those who are good at screaming and can hear between the lines are the ones who survive the crisis. Scientists believe that primitive humans who did not scream died out, and that modern humans are descendants of the screaming hominids.

Scream is one of the essential elements in horror films. Every time people hear a scream, they will instantly feel the terror around them is a bit more. Why does scream have such a great power?

According to a scientific study, what makes a scream so scary is its high roughness. The rougher the sound, the easier it was picked up by the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for sensing fear and danger. Such a sound is rarely heard in everyday life, so once it is heard, the brain sets off an "alarm". Because humans have evolved over thousands of years to default to screams like "alarm" and "call for help," screams have been so emotionally attached that they become more fearful every time they hear them.

Humans scream not only because of imminent danger or fear, but also to express joy or excitement, such as the crazy screams of fans at concerts. In humans, an active scream response is faster, more accurate, and more sensitive than an alert scream. Previous studies have suggested that humans and primates recognize and recognize screams in a single way, responding only to threats and danger signals. But new research suggests that as humans evolved to become more diverse, it's likely that only humans use screams to express positive emotions, such as great joy and joy. This may be due to the increasingly complex social environment of human communication needs.

Women prefer to express their emotions in their voices. Psychologists have compared men and women's fears in the same environment, and found that men and women are equally fearful, but women are more likely to scream.

Statistics show that men speak only one third as much as women, and women prefer to express their feelings through words, due to their sensitivity. For women, when they are in trouble, they are more willing to communicate with their friends to relieve the pressure. In addition, society is more tolerant of women, so when faced with an emergency, men will choose to suppress their emotions, while women will choose to scream or shout. This is why when a couple fights, women's emotions change with men's attitudes. They will store up all their unhappiness and negative feelings and finally burst out screaming once and for all.

Screaming is an expression of catharsis and can also become a protective umbrella. Appropriate screaming can relieve stress. Women are genetically programmed to be weak, so they need to scream to seek protection from men in case of danger and scare off enemies with high-pitched sounds.
